26,000 low-income New Mexicans will receive $500 or $1000
SANTA FE – $15 million in economic relief payments from the New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) and Taxation & Revenue Department will be delivered to more than 26,000 New Mexicans starting July 26. Payments will be delivered by direct-deposit or checks mailed to qualifying applicants.
Economic relief payments are going to 26,085 applicants, of which 19,289 are going out as ACH payments (direct deposit) and 6,796 are paper checks to follow shortly. New Mexicans receiving their economic relief payment by direct deposit should see the $500 or $1000 payments in their banks within about two business days.
Economic relief payments for low-income New Mexicans were approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham during the 2023 legislative session. The one-time payment is for qualified New Mexico households who applied and have the lowest incomes. The total number of payments issued was based on available funding; therefore, denied applications will not be reevaluated.
“We are grateful to the New Mexico Legislature, and Gov. Lujan Grisham for the funding to provide financial assistance to New Mexicans facing extreme financial hardship,” said Kari Armijo acting cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Human Services Department. “We know that many families are still struggling to make ends meet and this assistance will help them with rising prices of necessities like food and housing.”
Online applications were accepted via the YESNM Portal for a period of three weeks. To qualify for this financial payment individuals must be extremely low-income residents of New Mexico and are required to have a social security number or an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).
Payments were issued this week by the Taxation and Revenue Department via direct deposit or check. An email notice will be sent to those applicants who are not receiving a payment.
“We know many families are struggling, so it’s critical to provide some much-needed relief when prices have risen for food, energy and other necessities,” said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.
New Mexico households receiving the $500 and $1000 payments were determined based on identity verification and having the lowest income of those that applied. Households of one person will receive $500 payments and households with multiple people will receive payments of $1000.
