September is Recovery Month

Over 27 recovery events across 17 counties planned for September 2024

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) proudly announces a series of statewide events in September to mark Recovery Awareness Month and support everyone who is in recovery and all those who support them.

“Recovery Month is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible for everyone. It is a time to recognize the resilience of those in recovery and the dedication of those who support them,” said Kari Armijo, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Health Care Authority. “Our goal is to ensure that every New Mexican knows that help is available, and recovery is within reach.”

The HCA’s Behavioral Health Services Division, Recovery Communities of New Mexico, and the New Mexico Behavioral Health Collaborative invite New Mexicans to join in more than 27 events in 17 counties promoting healthy and rewarding lives this September.

These events include bike rides, car shows, music performances, traditional dances, and cultural celebrations—each providing a unique opportunity to connect, support, and celebrate recovery from substance use disorders and mental health challenges. September 2024 is dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders, offering vital support to all New Mexicans. The state’s events align with National Recovery Month, which highlights the importance of mental wellness and substance use treatment every September.

Recovery Month celebrates the successes of those in recovery, much like we celebrate advancements in managing chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. Recognizing achievements in behavioral health is just as crucial. This month also honors the many professionals dedicated to prevention, treatment, and recovery services.

“Recovery has profoundly impacted the lives of many New Mexicans,” said Nick Boukas, Director of Behavioral Health Services Division, “By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire others to seek the treatment and support they need — prevention works, treatment is effective, and recovery is possible every day.”

HCA remains committed to supporting New Mexicans facing mental health and substance use disorders. For immediate assistance, call, text, or chat the 24/7 988 lifeline for mental, emotional and substance use support.
