The 24/7 lifeline provides free, confidential support for emotional, mental, and substance use crises 

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) is proud to celebrate the first national 988 Day on September 8, 2024. 

Communities across the nation will unite on this day to raise awareness about 988, the 24/7 lifeline for emotional, mental, and substance use support, while also serving as a call to action to spread the word about this critical resource. 

“988 is a lifeline for anyone in our state who feels overwhelmed by life’s challenges,” said Kari Armijo, secretary of the New Mexico Health Care Authority. “Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, stress, or grief, or if you’re concerned about a loved one, 988 provides immediate, compassionate support.” 

This year’s theme, “No Judgment. Just Help.” embodies the core mission of 988: to provide skilled, caring support without stigma or judgment. Whether through a phone call, text, or chat, 988 is here to listen and help. As one caller shared, “I never felt judged; our conversations helped me remember I wasn’t alone.” 

Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 New Mexico lifeline has proven to be a vital resource for New Mexicans, with 67,357 people reaching out for help. The free and confidential, three-digit number connects individuals to trained behavioral health professionals, offering culturally responsive mental health and crisis support to all New Mexicans.  

September also marks National Suicide Prevention Month, a time when mental health advocates, prevention organizations, and communities unite to promote awareness.
